Planning for the future of a loved one with a disability can be complicated. It’s easy to become overwhelmed at the thought of organizing your financial and estate planning. For families who have a child (regardless of age) with a disability, the task is even more daunting. Without proper planning, your family member may lose entitlement to needs-based benefits such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and other government programs.
Have you outlined a plan to accommodate and support your child’s future needs? Have you written a Letter of Intent naming the proper backup guardians? While not a legal document or legally enforceable, a Letter of Intent will help those caring for your child to know your wishes. Have you implemented plans to direct your child’s portion of your estate in a manner that will not cause them to lose their important benefit eligibility?
This 90-minute workshop is intended to assist families through the complicated maze of special needs planning techniques. It will be presented in easy-to-understand terms with a question and answer session to follow. The topics to be covered include:
Wills and Living Trusts
Finding the Proper Attorney
Government Benefit Programs
Special Needs Trusts
The $2,000 Federal Limit
Powers of Attorney
Self-Determination & Self-Advocacy
Guardianship & Conservatorship
Circles of Support
Letters of Intent
A Lifetime of Meaningful Supports
